Josh Trank wanted to cast black actress to play Sue Storm.
Josh Trank wanted to cast a black actress to play Sue Storm. He recently revealed that he got a red light from the studio 20th Century Fox.
Kate Mara, who starred as Sue Storm for Fantastic Four of Josh Trank, wasn’t the ideal choice for the character according to the director himself. At the beginning of the production on Trank’s Fantastic Four, he chose a completely new cast to play Marvel’s 20th Century Fox reboot of Fantastic Four franchise following Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer in 2005 and 2007. Trank selected Miles Teller as Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm aka The Thing, Mara as Sue Storm aka Invisible Woman, and Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm aka Human Torch.
The 2015 flop was breeding notorious causes and difficulties since day one, especially when Trank wanted to cast black. Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm, which was a white character in comic books and also a previous franchise. Not just him, but recently it was revealed that he was almost cast a black Sue Storm. (which is not a bad thing by any means. But it can cause confusion to comic fans as these characters are originally white).
His View On The Casting
In an interview with Geeks of Color, the director talked a little about his not pleasant experience on the film. The movie failed in almost every aspect. Here’s what he said about it:
There were a lot of controversial conversations that were had behind the scenes on that. I was mostly interested in a black Sue Storm, a black Johnny Storm, and a black Franklin Storm. But also, when you’re dealing with a studio on a massive movie like that, everybody wants to keep an open mind to, like, who the big stars are going to be. ‘Maybe it’ll be Margot Robbie,’ or something like that. But when it came down to it, I found a lot of pretty heavy pushback on casting a Black woman in that role…
When I look back on that, I should have just walked when that realization sort of hit me, and I feel embarrassed about that, that I didn’t just out of principle. Because those aren’t the values I stand for in my own life; those weren’t the values then or ever for me. Because I’m somebody who always talks about standing up for what I believe in, even if it means burning my career out. I feel bad that I didn’t take it to the mat with that issue. I feel like I failed in that regard.
When the movie was released, a large amount of chaos and controversy created by racist fans. They were very upset with Jordan’s casting. It’s no wonder that there would have been even more. If Trank got the opportunity to cast a Black Sue Storm. Yet, it would’ve made more sense if the entire Storm family was played by black actors. Due to the studio’s interference, Michael B. Jordan had to play Johnny Storm. Reg E Cathey as his dad Franklin Storm, and with the cast of Kate Mara as Sue. They had to make another plot theory saying Sue was Franklin’s adopted daughter. It’s still not explained why the 20th Fox Centuries studio stopped the director by casting a black Sue Storm
With Disney’s acquisition of the studio 20th century Fox, Fantastic Four fans can hope to have new hope. It will be rebooted to fit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for now that the character rights are back in Marvel Studios.
