Oscars 2021 has been delayed
Oscars 2021 has been delayed due to the problems caused by the current pandemic wordwide. So Oscars will happen, but just not in February 28th as planned.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made an announcement today (Monday, June 15). It said that they have to postpone the 93rd Academy Awards telecast by two months. The new date will be April 25, 2021. Organizers have also agreed to extend the eligibility window beyond December 31-2020, to the end of February.
The pandemic has already halted work on many films that were about to release by the end of 2020. They officially have not confirmed that if the Oscars 2021 ceremony will be virtual or in-person. With the changing situations it’s really kind of early to mention.
Governors Awards gala, which takes place in the fall, has been postponed to a later, unspecified date. The Academy has not decided when they are going to conduct those. The December opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures was pushed to April to coincide with the Oscars.
Oscar Push Back History
They have pushed back Oscars few times in the history. Due to LA flooding in 1938, after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in 1968; and following the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
It seems that usual rules changed
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently changed its rules so films that debut on streaming or video on demand services are eligible for next year’s awards.
The current rules implement a restriction towards films that can enter Oscars. If the movie has been shown in a Los Angeles cinema for at least a week, it is eligible. But Cinemas had to terminate shows during the coronavirus crisis. Regarding that, organizers said a “temporary” exception would come into play.
Many release dates sent to later dates. Some movies had to go digital release straightly.
The Oscars is not the only big entertainment event that Covid-19 made a mess. The prestigious Tony theatre awards were due to take place earlier this month but were delayed, and the new date is yet to be announced. Some events had to shut down entirely, including last month’s Eurovision Song Contest.
It also said there would always be 10 films in the best film category rather than a fluctuating number between five and 10. This rule won’t come into play until 2022, however.
The format of the Oscar ceremony has not been determined yet. It is probably at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, telecast on ABC, .
“We find ourselves in uncharted territory this year and will continue to work with our partners at the Academy to ensure next year’s show is a safe and celebratory event that also captures the excitement of the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said in a statement.
The Academy announced that they were forming a task force with the Producers Guild of America “to develop and implement new representation and inclusion standards for Oscars eligibility by July 31, 2020.”
